HSG and SIS Procedures

Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

What is HSG?

This procedure looks at the uterine cavity and the openness of the Fallopian tubes. The procedure lasts about 10 minutes and is performed in the hospital’s Radiology unit. The physician injects contrast dye into the uterine cavity via a catheter inserted through the cervix. If the Fallopian tubes are open, the contrast dye will fill the tubes and enter the abdomen. You will have the results right away.

Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SIS)

What is SIS?

SIS is an ultrasound test performed in the office where a catheter is inserted through the cervix, and saline (fluid) is injected to distend the uterine cavity. This is generally comfortably performed and requires little downtime from work. This test can help detect the possible presence of any structural issues with the uterus. Sometimes, this special test can uncover polyps (overgrowth of the uterine lining) or fibroids (overgrowth of the uterine muscle). Both conditions are non-cancerous. Nonetheless, both polyps and fibroids may interfere with pregnancy. Dr. DiPaola can also perform an in-office Fallopian tube patency test in conjunction with an SIS. This is a great option for those with allergic reactions to contrast dyes.
